When I first started learning Teochew, I used to watch lots of Tom and Jerry short films. Tom, the cat, is called Di1da5 的禾 which is a Chinese oboe. Jerry, the mouse, is called Lêng5zêng1 靈精｜灵精 which means quick witted, smart, intelligent. Lêng5zêng1’s other meaning means to be awake.
