Do remember we are learning Teochew and not Mandarin. These characters for muan5ciag4 麻雀 [as in
sparrows] are also the same characters for mahjong but said as muan5ziaoh4.
kên1 坑
in Teochew means a valley and this character 坑
in Mandarin means a hole or pit or tunnel.
sio1pah4 相拍
in Teochew means to fight amongst at least two people and is said as 打架 in Mandarin.
Lui5gong1 雷公
is the God of Thunder in Chinese mythology. You will also hear Teochew people
saying Lui5gong1 hiang2 雷公響 and this
means the God of Thunder giving off a sound or thunderclap.
The English translation of the above nursery rhyme is as
follows.
Sparrows fighting falling into a valley
Children fighting get a scolding from grown-ups
