Translated
from the Mandarin explanation of the above phrase: “It is a mistaken figure
of speech, contrary to established norm, which is correct and proper but
cannot obtain the people's acceptance.” |
Just a note: hiao1 in Mandarin is an owl but in Teochew is means
to do something evil; zêg8si5 means a short period. From the Teochew phrase:
squat for three years, do evil for a short period of time.
