bu1 𨁏 and nêg4 蹃

Gang Hiog 江煜 explores bu1 𨁏 and nêg4

Even before we begin, there is a bit of a confusion in the use of characters pertaining to the word “or” in Teochew.  This word “or” can be written in different ways.

Teochew – a1si6

Mandarin

啊是

或是

阿是

也許是|也许是

抑是

抑是

也是

bu1 𨁏 is a Teochew word and one of the dictionaries explains it as shown below.

bu1

𨁏

Ka1ziam1 bho5 zu3i3 ho2 tag4dioh4

Teochew: 骹尖無注意好踢著|骹尖无注意好踢到着

Mandarin: 腳尖無注意好踢到|脚尖无注意好踢到

Have not been paying attention and kicked into the tip of one’s foot.

In my trilingual Teochew dictionary gives this example of use.

Ziah4 ka1 bu1dioh4 go3 zeng1

隻骹𨁏著塊磚|只骹𨁏着块砖

Mandarin translation: 腳踢著塊磚頭|脚踢着块砖头

The leg kicked onto a piece of brick.

Lim Lung Lung gives this example.

Ziah4 ka1 bu1 gao3 huêh4 lao5

隻骹𨁏到血流|只骹𨁏到血流

The leg has been kicked until blood is flowing.

lao5huêh4 流血 means to bleed

And after thinking about the examples given, I think tag4 and bu1 both mean to kick but bu1 is self-inflicted.

Now that we have got an understanding of the word bu1, we can consider Gang Hiog’s 江煜 example of use of bu1 in the beginning of the video.

Le2 kah4 si6 bu1dioh4 a1si6 tag4dioh4

𠹛𨁏著啊是踢著

There is no coded simplified character for kah4 [|].

Did you kick into something or did (someone) kick you?

ming2zai1 sang1 ka1 bu1dioh4

免知雙骹𨁏|免知双骹𨁏

Don’t know that the pair of legs had been kicked.

Let us explore the word nêg4 so we can understand this Teochew word. Lim Lung Lung explains nêg4 as to pedal as in to pedal a bicycle, which obviously does not apply to the example given below.

Le2 si6 bung1 mang2 ka1 nêg4dioh4

是分蠓骹蹃著|汝是分蠓骹蹃着

Mang2 ka1 can also be written as 蠓腳

Gang Hiog 江煜 has not explained the meaning of nêg4 in the above example. If you know the meaning of the above sentence, please share in the comment section.

Nang2 in2zoin5 dah8 ka1cia1 zion6 sia5bo1 dioh8 nêg4 iao1 dua7lag8

俺以前踏骹車上斜坡著蹃夭大力|俺以前踏骹车上斜坡着蹃夭大力

We previously rode a bicycle up a slope, had to cycle more vigorously.
