The person in this video used to be an anchor for Swatow Broadcasting Station and he has a Swatow accent.
He explains the phrase “san1 gu3 no6 gai5 liu1”
in which many people previously did not know how to read and write and they go
to Suan1tao5 bou1 汕頭埠｜ 汕头埠
[Swatow port] to get educated people to write letters for
them. For every three sentences, the people were charged two pieces of copper
coins and these coins were called liu1. Liu1 was a term used by our ancestors
in our homeland before some of our people migrated to South East Asia. Liu1 is
not a borrow Malay word “duit”.
