Is it possible to cook without rice?

There is a sog’ghe 俗語 [a common saying] which you can hear in this video.

ka2 sêg4hu6 lang5 ui5 bho5 bhi2 ze1 cuê1

巧媳婦難為無米之炊| 巧媳妇难为无米之炊

A skilful daughter in law will find it difficult to cook without rice.

The Mandarin version is:

巧婦難為無米之炊|巧妇难为无米之炊

I wonder why the Teochew version does not say sing1bu6 新婦 and uses sêg4hu6 for daughter in law.

The deeper meaning of the saying is: "It is not possible to do anything without equipment."
