Basic Teochew Words V

Teochew Store has released the 5th video on Teochew basic words.  I have made notes to share with you. I hope this helps you to learn our mother tongue. 

cu3 厝	house, flat, apartment
bang5 房	room also said as bang5 goin1 房間
têng1 窗	window also said as têng1 mung5 窗門
mung5doin6 門第	door threshold or doorstep or doorsill
cê3so2 廁所	toilet – in olden times it was known as dang1si1 東司 and in polite company it is known as soi2 ciu3 goin1 洗手間
dou5bang5 廚房	kitchen dou5bang5 廚房 is a Mandarin word. We also call kitchen zao3ê6 竈下 or huê2sig4 伙室
ing1dang5 煙筒	chimney – if you have roots from Gig’Ion you would call fumes as êng1 煙 and therefore chimney as êng1dang5
ceng5 牀｜床	could be a dining table [bung7ceng5飯牀] or bed [ming5ceng5 眠牀]
lao5tui1 樓梯	stairs, staircase and a lift is known as diang6 lao5tui1 電樓梯 and lift is known as an elevator in North America
deng5 長	long
do2 短	short in length: short in height is known as gê6 下 or oi2gê6 矮下
ci1’i5 󿗧󿗧 or ci1ghi5 󿗧󿗧	dirty: characters not known. We have lots of words for dirty and these include ab4zab4 腌臢 ; am1zam1腌臢 both Mandarin words: nah4sab4垃圾 o1zo1 鏖糟 [a Cantonese word] and a friend’s mother living in Swatow calls dirty tai2go1 癩歌 which actually mean leprosy!
cêng1kih4 清缺	clean – we also call clean as dig8dig8 bêh8bêh8 直直白白 or just bêh8bêh8 白白
pin1 便	cheap
gui3 貴	expensive [It is always good to learn the opposite when learning a language.]
