Basic Teochew IV

I remember now why I have not completed a post for BasicTeochew IV from Teochew Store. However, YouTube sent me the video again this morning.

Again, do not get the tones wrong. To help those who are tone deaf i.e., those who find it difficult to get the pitch right, our ancestors have helped us speak Teochew properly.

sang1 de7 雙箸

for chopsticks we say sang1de7

ziah4 de1 隻豬

for pig we say ziah4de1

So, when you are listening to spoken Teochew, listen to the sound of the character before the noun and it gives the noun its meaning.

At this point I must tell you about fish sauce, which I think is rather smelly. Fish sauce is called pang1 co1teng1芳臊湯 in Teochew. The co1 is the same as cao3co1 臭臊 as in having a fishy smell.

Our ancestors never used fish sauce until our people who went to Thailand brought it back to homeland and now it is a popular condiment in our homeland.
