Test Yourself Video from Teochew Store

Teochew Store uploaded a video to test our Teochew.

You may want to look at the notes below after testing yourself.

gian5 ho2 mai3 zao2  行好勿走。

Walk properly do not run.

好好地走不要跑。

zai1guang1 mai3 buah4 loh8 ke3 liao2 bêh4 m6dig4 ki2 a7  知觀勿跋落去了[足百]起啊。

Be careful (if one were) to fall down, (one could) not be able to climb up.

小心跌下去爬不起來。

I would have said the below rather than what is on the video.

zai1guang1 mai3 buah4 loh8 ke3; bêh4 bhoi6dig4 ki2lai5  知觀勿跋落去[足百]𠁞起來。

Be careful not to fall down, (otherwise one) could not be able to rise up.

小心跌下去爬不起來。

zai1guang1 知觀

be careful

xiao3xin1 小心

bêh4 [足百]

to climb

pa2

NOTE: is said as bê5 in Teochew to mean to crawl

ui1sêng1 gio3 le2 inh8 zoi7 ê7  醫生叫汝夗㩼下。

The doctor has asked for you to sleep more.

醫生叫你多睡睡。

Doctor is said as ui1sêng1 but Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors are called sing1sên1 先生 and barefoot doctors are called ciah4ka1 ui1sên1 赤骹醫生 I am also aware that in Malaysia and Singapore, Teochew people in these countries call doctor lao2gung1 老君

Sleep is said as ug8 from people living in Teochew City, in6 or inh8 or ngh8 from Swatow and I say ngh8 – I am not an expert on how people from the other places speak.

ziah8hung1 a1si6 ziah8dê5 long2 mo2  薰阿茶攏孬。

Both smoking or drinking tea are not allowed.

抽煙或者喝茶都不許。

a1si6 A 抑是

or

huo4shi4 或是  huo4zhe3 或者

Mogher, the online dictionary from Teochew City writes a1si6 as 抑是

Hung1 a1ho2 dê5 a1ho2 ua2 long2 bhoi6 ngiang3薰阿好茶好我攏𠁞癮。

I do not like both smoking cigarette and drinking tea.

煙也好茶也好我都不喜歡。

Standard Chinese has a grammar rule which is . . . 也好 . . . 也罷 and I have heard Professor Lim saying this . . . ia7ho2 . . . ia7ba6: hung1 ia7ho2 dê5 ia7ba6 煙也好茶也罷 and I do not understand why they have not used this format.

I think the correct Chinese should be as below.

Hung1 ia7ho2 dê5 ia7ba6 ua2 long2 bhoi6 ngiang3  也好茶也罷我攏𠁞癮。

I do not like both smoking cigarette and drinking tea.

煙也好茶也罷我都不喜歡。

da2li2 le2 ke3 a7m6, ua2 li2 zian3do3 ain3 ke3 打理去啊唔哩正倒欲去。

In any case, if you go or not, I am going.

不管你去不去反正我是要去的。

da2li2 打理 means to take care of, to sort things out, to manage, to put in order and does not have the same meaning as bu4guan3 不管 which means regardless of; no matter what and I would have said as below and I think bho5guang2 無管 is more suitable to have the same meaning as bu4guan3 不管

Bho5guang2 le2 ain3 ke3 a1mai3 ua2 li2 zian3do3 ain3 ke3  無管阿勿哩正倒欲

The ain3 and mia3 are a pair of characters which works together

Next note: The Teochew li2 has the same meaning as jiu4 就 in Mandarin and its purpose is to emphasise that the first person will definitely go.

zian3do3 正倒

anyway, in any case

fan3zheng4 反正

Ua2 ngên6houn2 dioh8 ke3 硬否著去

No matter what, I must go.

我非去不可。

Ua2 ngên6houn2 ain3 ke3  硬否

No matter what, I must go.

我非去不可。

There is a Chinese grammar rule . . . . . . 不可 which means there is an obligation or something which must be done.

非 is short for fei1dei3 非得 which means must and followed by bu4ke3 不可 which means cannot, must not or should not OR followed by bu4xing2 不行 which means out of the question, will not do etc.

Do note that this is a Chinese grammar rule and does not apply to our Teochew language.

Le2 gai2 di7zêg8ni5 lai2 gai5? 介底一年來個?

Which year did you arrive?

你是哪一年來的?

Ua2 si6 zoin5ni5 lai5 Bag4gian1 gai5.

我是前年來北京個。

I came to Beijing two years ago.

我是前年到北京。

Gim1rig8 kui1huê6 di7diang5 zo3 zu2cioh8?今日開會底[亻㐱] 做主席?

Who is the Chairman for today’s meeting?

今天開會誰是主席?

kui1huê6 開會|开会

meeting

kai1hui4 開會开会

zu2cioh8 主席

chairman, chairperson

zhu3xi2 主席
