毆｜殴 ao1

I was listening to Kevin Rudd talking and he used the word dou3zêⁿ1 鬥爭 to mean to struggle. He was speaking in Mandarin but I just used Romanised Teochew as this blog is about learning Teochew. 

I came across this ao1 character while looking at dou3zêⁿ1.

So what does ao1 mean? It means to hit with a rod or a long  stick or a pole.

We have so many words to mean to hit - ong, biang, bhu2 拊, bong5, kong3 控, hug4 刜, sug 摔, pah 拍 and I have learnt a new word today which is ao1 i.e. to hit. 

What examples did the dictionary give in how to use ao1?

[BTW: ao1 毆 is a homophone to ao1 甌 as in a cup or mug.]

Example one: ao1 ziah4 de1 毆隻豬 - hit a pig with a rod or long stick or pole [poor pig!]

Example two: ao1 liab8 gaⁿ1na2 loh8lai5 毆粒橄欖落來 - to hit with a pole so as to harvest olives

No Mandarin translations were given for these two examples. See Zhang Xiao Shan Second Edition page 664.
