It is not possible to learn huge number of Teochew words and not make notes. For example, if one were to learn a new word like how to say a reservoir in Teochew, then one has to write it down and store the information away. Let me share with you what I do. Perhaps you can hear A'Tui 阿涛 saying zui2kou3 in this video.
zui2kou3 水庫|水库 kou3 褲 trousers |
reservoir MW: zo7 座 |
shui3ku4 水庫|水库 |
If one has just seen this kou3 庫 for the first time, then it is a good idea to remind oneself of a homophone to kou3 and in this case is kou3 as in a pair of trousers.
In addition, one should also write down the measure word for a reservoir which is a zo7 座
It is optional if one wants to write down the Mandarin part.
Do remember that kou3's tone does not change.
However, the zui2's [water] tone will be changed to tone 6 zui(6) and if you were to write the tone changes, then write this in parenthesis.
At about 6 minutes into the video, you will hear them saying
lêg8zui2 cên1suan1 zui6si6 gimsuan1 ngeng5suan1 綠水青山就是金山銀山
Crystal clear water green hills are precisely golden and silver mountains – a theory put forward by Xi JinPing in 2005 i.e. a clean environment can bring wealth to the local communities. This theory was included in the 19th Congress in October 2017 to support environmental protection in China.
Just before 2:30 Ziao2cui3 鳥嘴 was scolding Dang1guê1 冬瓜 and she used the term bhung5mêng5 sia6huê6 文明社會. Do you know what bhung5mêng5 sia6huê6 mean? It means a civilised society.
I think the Chinese thinks that as part of a civilised society, people should not be throwing things on the streets. I have noticed how clean the streets are in China in all the videos I have seen of China.
I have also noticed how they look after their environment, their wild animals and I think this is really wonderful.
Did you know the Chinese plant more trees than any other countries? The only country which has a growing elephant population is China.
Regarding Ziao2cui3 - ziao2 as in a bird, cui3 as in mouth - ziao2cui3 actually has a sinister meaning. It is a woman who minds other people's business and always saying things which she should not. In Hokkien, they have a word ke po 雞婆 and ziao2cui3 is just like the Hokkien ke po - a busybody.
I hope you also realise the actor who plays the character Ziao'cui is a man! I suppose it will be difficult to find a Teochew lady who can play such a despicable character.
Do remember, it is a drama and its purpose is to make us laugh.
