I am very interested in the word which Ziao’ciu Sim has used – dou3(2)giao2. They have used 補交 in the subtitles which means to make up and is said as bou2gao1 in Teochew.
Let us consider dou3 first. The simplified character for
dou3 is 斗 and
my big Chinese dictionary points to the traditional Chinese character 鬭
like in dou3bai5 鬭牌
to mean “playing with cards” which we normally say in Teochew as buah8bai5 跋牌
to mean to gamble with cards.
Many overseas Teochew people will know the phrase buah8giao2 跋繳
to mean to gamble. This is our Mang5nam5 Uê7 閩南話
which we share with Hokkien people. It has been suggested that the giao2
character could be 徼 which
means "by mere luck".
It is obvious from the conversation, dou3(2)giao2 has something
to do with “gambling” or at least whatever it is, it seems very risky and perhaps
it is a scam.
Ua2 sion6 Ziao’ciu Sim bung1 nang5 guang1 ke3 我想鳥嘴嬸分人誑去。
– I think ZCS has been scammed.
Ua2 – I
sion6 – think
Ziao’ciu Sim – Bird mouth aunty
bung1 is like the Mandarin 給
and 被 which is a passive voice clause
and it does not really disclose who the person is.
guang1 – lied to, scammed, cheated – This is a Teochew specific
word!
