Teochew common sayings

The grandson asked his grandmother for Teochew common saying and the background music was getting louder and louder and the grandmother's voice was getting more and more difficult to hear . . .

bag8nang5 bhou2 main3 kung3 dou2

Other people’s wife, do not starve oneself [i.e. do not spend money on other people’s wife]

hao6sên1 huang1liu5 guê3dou7

Outstanding young people travelling, when old cannot walk.

To raise a child who does not want to study, would it not be better to raise a pig.

She actually said ham’ru5 and I do not know which ham character to use and the subtitle uses bug4ru5 which means would it not be better . . .

U6zin5 bhoi2 mang2hion1

(if one is) wealthy buy mosquito coil, (if poor) buy mosquito net

I cannot hear clearly this line

guan1ca5 doin2 ngiao2ce2

a rat inside a coffin [we do not have a character for ngiao2]

The grandmother explained that “guan1ca5 doin2 ngiao2ce2” means “de5 si2 nang5除死人” and the dictionary explains it as “指小孩胡攪蠻纏,鬧得大人沒辦法” meaning children annoyingly pestering and adults not being able to do anything about it
