firecrackers

I was watching a Mandarin drama and they said firecrackers as 爆竹 to set off firecrackers as 燒爆竹 and the drama is called Love Like the Galaxy 星漢燦爛。

As for us Teochew people, we call firecrackers as pong3pio6 and to set off firecrackers as pah4 pong3pio6.

pong3pio6

firecrackers

胖鰾|胖鳔

pah4 pong3pio6

to light firecrackers

拍胖鰾|拍胖鳔

In Mandarin, the pong3 character means fat as in excess weight not the fat of an animal and in Teochew pong3 means to swell up.

For example, we say:

bhag8re2 zim3 zui2 oi6 pong3

木耳浸水會 木耳浸水会

wood ear fungus upon soaking in water will swell

As for pio6 we use this character in fish maw

he5pio6

魚鰾|鱼鳔

fish maw

I have been wondering why the Teochew authorities use these pong3 and pio6 characters for fireworks. Does anybody know the answer?

The pong3 碰鰾 pong3pio6 from Wikitonary is a much better character than this 胖 pong3 but if you were to turn to Zhang Xiao Shan 2nd Ed page 939 you will see pong3pio6 is written as 胖鰾
