Continued discussions of character 許

The Mandarin word bu4xu3 不許|不许 which means "must not" is said in Teochew Uê as “mo2 ”. This character can also be said as nao1 as in nao1zêng2 孬種|孬种 which means a coward or useless scoundrel. I have alreadydiscussed xu3duo1 許多 which means lots of as hoh4zoi7 好㩼 in Teochew Uê but in some cases it is also said as hion3zoi7 許㩼 in Teochew Uê such as:

hion3zoi7 se7 zo3 m6li7

許㩼事做唔戾|许㩼事做唔戾

So many tasks, unable to attend to all matters.

And some people may say, especially Teochew people living in SE Asia:

hion3zoi7 se7 zo3 bhoi6hu3

許㩼事做𠁞赴|许㩼事做𠀾

So many tasks, unable to attend to all matters.

And you will seldom hear our people in homeland using the word “bhoi6hu3” and this word is used by some Teochew people living in SE Asia.

I found this hion3 character recently by reading one of Professor Lim’s articles in which he used the character hion3.

Hion3 has two meanings – one of which is as per above “lots” and the other is to give direction for example hion3boin5 許畔 and has the same meaning as the Mandarin na4bian5 那邊 which means over there.

You can find the use of the character li7 as in m6li7 in Zhang Xiao Shan's second edition Teochew dictionary page 688.
