Zhao4 照

We will explore the Chinese character zhao4 照 today.

zhao4xiang4 照相 or 照像 or she4ying3 攝影 – to take a photograph or photo - and we say this in Teochew as 

1. niab4ian2 攝影 
2. ho3sion3 □像 (潮汕方言)
3. zio3sion3 照相

zhao4pian4 照片 – a photograph / a photo – is said as sion3 piang3 相片 or 像片.  Overseas Teochew people say sion3ian2 相影 or 像影 - and perhaps this is an old word used by our grandparents when they left China.

and the measure word for sion3 piang3 相片 is dion1 張

zhao4xiang4ji1 照相機 or 照像機 – a camera is called zio3sion3gi1照相機 or ho3sion3gi1 □像機 - there is no character for ho3 

and the measure word for a camera is gai5 個 

And how you say digital camera? We would just read the Chinese characters in Teochew. In Mandarin digital camera is called shu4ma3 xiang4ji1 数码相机 or shu4ma3 zhao4xiang4ji1 数码照相机.  Therefore in Teochew we say siao3bhê2 zio3sion3gi1 数码照相机 where siao3bhê2 数码 means digital. 

zhao4liao4 照料 - to tend to / to take care of / to look after – zio3gu3 照顧

zhao4li3 照理 – as explained by 照估計 – means according to reason or usually or normally or theoretically is said as zio3li2 照理
