熻 hip4 潮汕方言

hip4

Page 261 of character dictionary and page 449 of the word dictionary

There are two meanings to this character hip4

One: The word dictionary explains it by 把東西閉封在鍋里; 用適量的水煮成蒸氣把食物蒸熟 which is men1re4 悶熱

This is to put something [obviously a food item] inside a closed pot and use appropriate amount of water [usually very little water] to steam cook a food item completely.

It gives an example: 熻蕃薯 hip4 huang5 ze5 and it explains in standard Chinese as 悶紅薯 men1 hong2shu2.

This could be translated as “to steam cook sweet potato” in a closed vessel.

Two: The second meaning of hip4  is explained as 不通風 - lack of ventilation, which means stuffy and close.

So it looks like the word hip4 熻 can be used in two ways.  One is to describe how something can be steamed cook in a closed container.  The other is to describe a room or a place, which lacks ventilation and this implies it is hot and stuffy.
