Stir fry prawns with our Teochew tea

The lady in this video speaks with a beautiful Teochew City accent. I do not have this accent, but I watch enough videos from Teochew City to understand what she is saying. 

I have typed out what she has said using our Teochew characters. It will be interesting for those who can read Chinese to see how our Teochew characters are used.

I have also used Traditional Characters because overseas Chinese are used to reading and writing with such characters.

Notes:

蜜蘭香 Bhig8lang5hiang1 is a type of tea from Phoenix Mountain, Teochew

The direct Teochew translation for the Mandarin lü4 濾｜滤 is dêⁿ3 滯｜滞 which means to drain or strain but she said pag8da1 曝灱

重翻 dêng5huang1 is the equivalent Teochew word for the Mandarin 重新 which means once again

kua3 kua3 means leaning on one side

4th month -  鱗  can be said as lang1 as in ba1lang1, as in mackerel  and ling5 as in fish scales

 What accent do you think the lady has? I think she has a Chaoyang accent.

Tomato Ketchup Prawns 茄汁蝦

Iab Hui has just uploaded a video on how to make sweet and sour prawns, Teochew style and the dish is called gio5zab4 hê5 茄汁蝦

As usual, we can learn lots of Teochew words by listening to this video. I have made a word list for you so you can follow the video and understand what he is saying.

cu2li2 is a Mandarin Teochew word and our Teochew word is li2loh8 理落

For this case, we Teochew people normally say goi7 易

Pang1 芳 originally mean flavour and now it follows the Mandarin meaning for 香 which means appetising.

He then said in Mandarin 搞定 and in Teochew we say “finish making” as muêh8dig8 物直

 

Black

I was using some black pepper yesterday and I thought why was it called hêg4 hou5zio1 黑胡椒 and I was also thinking why daylight robbery or a protection racket or a shop which robs its customers call hêg4diam3 黑店 and when the truth is distorted, like the way the US invents fake stories about China, is called diang1dao2hêg4bêh8 顛倒黑白 ?

What has happened to the ou1 烏 for black?

When the sky and earth are both dark, we do call this ou1tiⁿ1 am3di7 烏天暗地 and when someone is beaten until blue-black, we do call this bruise ou1cêⁿ1 烏青 and the most famous ou1 is used in black dragon tea and we call this oolong tea as ou1lêng5 dê5 烏龍茶 and black olives as ou1nam2 烏欖 and freshwater eel as ou1hiⁿ6muaⁿ5 烏耳鰻｜乌耳鳗

Therefore, we do say hêg4 and ou1 for black.

Teochew Common Sayings

On the video screen, the Mandarin statement reads “讓我們的文化不斷傳承” which means “allow our culture continuously passes on to future generations”.

And he goes on to say a number of our Teochew common sayings and common sayings is called 俗語 sog8ghe2 in Teochew Uê. I have translated those I know and if you know those which I do not know, please share in the comments section.

好囝免用加 - 加囝餓死父 ｜ 好囝免用加 -加囝饿死父

I have always felt that this saying must have been invented in the last 40 years when the Chinese authorities wanted a one child policy. The saying refers to having a good child is enough and having too many children will starve the father to death.

ho2 sên1 pua3gê1gian2 dam3bhai7 ri5 mo2 iang2

好生破家囝 - 髧眉兒孬養。｜ 好生破家囝 - 髧眉儿孬养。

I have heard this version.

ho2 sên1 pua3gê1gian2 mo2 sên1 dam3bhai7 ri5

好生破家囝  孬生髧眉兒。 好生破家囝  孬生髧眉儿。

It is better to have a spendthrift son than a useless one.

Guan1 dua7 ciu2bio1 zung2 – u6zin5 dan3 uê7 ang5

官大手錶準 有錢呾話紅｜官大手表准 有钱呾话红

I have not heard of this saying before. From what is written, I can infer that to have what a person in a high position say prevails and similarly those who have money, and whatever they say prevails. If you know the meaning of this saying, please share.

He actually said bhu2 sian1 and I cannot think which bhu2 he is referring to.

One can learn Kungfu fighting until one die but this is not as good as a bullet.

lao2bêh4 actually means grand uncle.

There is another version: 百貨合百客阿姆合阿伯｜百货合百客,阿姆合阿伯

everybody has their likes and dislikes

It is alright to drink excessively but one must not be offensive.
